CONSIDER THE SILVERFISH
by Julie Lavender

My husband is an avid reader and book collector. As an entomologist by profession, he would most likely say he hadn’t met many insects he disliked.

But, I met one before heading out on my walk with God today – the dreaded silverfish. It’s my husband’s nemesis! And it was crawling on the bathroom wall!

The small wingless insect gets its name from the silvery body color and the fact that it moves in an almost fish-like motion using the antennae to wiggle along with the help of its short legs.

Silverfish are quite the pest and can chew through practically anything in a home that has sugar or starch. Silverfish eat all forms of paper, any food that contains sugar or starch, glue, wallpaper, clothing, and more.

A real nuisance!

If we’re not careful, we wind up with silverfish in the attic where David stores many of his books, in the library where we have more books, in the kitchen, or the bathroom, because they’ll slurp on shampoo and such, too.

The insect is rather small and flat, therefore it can slip through almost any crack or opening to squeeze its way into the house to seek something to devour.

Our pest control service usually keeps them at bay, but occasionally between visits, one will show up. Then I know it’s time to call them to come back early.

You know, the Bible says that Satan likes nothing better than to destroy.

And it’s up to me to be on my guard to make sure he doesn’t slip through any cracks!!

What about you? Have you ever seen a silverfish munching on your paperbacks?

What helps you stay on guard to keep the devil from slipping into the cracks of your life?
