CONSIDER THE SEA OATS
by Julie Lavender

A recent trip to Amelia Island, off the coast of northern Florida, led my path across the sands of Fernandina Beach.

Just above the waters’ edge, sea oats grow prolifically, just like they do along the eastern seaboard all the way up to Virginia and along the coast line of the Gulf States.

Slow-growing, but deep and abiding roots

Sea Oats grow slowly on the upper dunes along beach fronts, taking their time to plunge massive root systems into the sand.

Sea Oats thrive in blowing sand, too. Once the base of the plant becomes covered in sand, it spreads by way of rhizomes – horizontal stems that ‘tack’ themselves to the ground with shoots and more roots.

Sturdy and strong

The plant’s sturdiness is enhanced by its tolerance to wind, salt water splashes, and drought.

God's perfect plan

The characteristics God gave the sea oat make it especially valuable to the coastline.

Standing strong amidst the storms

The substantial root system underneath enables sea oats to hold beach sand in place during extreme weather situations, like tropical storms and hurricanes.

Sea Oats stand tall and resolute during a storm.

Even the Sea Oats cry out in praise

In fact, the beautiful seed heads atop the plant sound a bit like muted tambourines or applause when rustled by the wind.

Like they’re praising God with hands and heads lifted high, swaying in worship to the Creator.

Thank you, God, for reminding me to let my roots grow deep in you. For that’s the only way I can withstand the storms. Help me praise you despite the storms and during the storms, God, with hands held high and roots holding fast.

And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. - Colossians 2:6-7 NLT

What about you? What helps you grow your roots down deep into Christ? For me, it’s starting my day with prayer while I walk and keeping a casual conversation with God throughout the remainder of the day, reading God’s word, and listening to Christian music.
