CONSIDER THE LICHEN
by Julie Lavender

I’m likin’ my walk with God today because I came across some lichen.

Yeah, I know – corny, huh?

Have you ever seen lichen when you were out and about? It’s such an interesting creation. It has a plant-like appearance, but it’s not a plant.

It often grows on other plants. However, it’s not parasitic to the plant. In other words, it doesn’t harm the plant or tree that it grows on.

The lichen organism is a symbiotic relationship between two organisms: a fungus and an algae. The two live harmoniously, dependent on each other for survival.

Sometimes the fungus and algae that grow together as a lichen can live separately as unique organisms, and sometimes, one can’t grow without the other.

And when they do live symbiotically, the lichen has a completely different appearance than that of the separate organisms.

Interesting, huh? Two different creations that live together harmoniously.

Hmm, wonder what message God has for humans with that creation …..

Reminds me of that verse, Job 12:8 (ESV), that says,
“But ask the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you..”

Dear God, Your creations never fail to teach us frail humans. Help me live harmoniously with my brethren, because, well, likin’ and lovin’ – it’s what you command.

What about you? Did God teach you something this week through one of His creations? Share below the lesson you learned on your walk with God this week. I'd love to hear from you!

  1. I liken your likin' of the lichen to how God loves each of us individually, but its when we come together in unity to do His will that we make the biggest impact. Well said Ms. Julie. I likened it to various like-lessons.

  2. Jim, You are so right - it is such a comfort to know that He loves us individually, but it's cool to know we make the biggest impact when we live in unity and work as a team for His kingdom!!! Thanks for commenting!
